A few years ago, The Boat was designated an asset of Community Value, protecting it from demolition or development. Not that there’s much chance of that happening anyway, since this is a true neighbourhood pub with a loyal local following.

On the bar you’ll find up to six real ales and ciders, and the interior contains an intriguing mix of decor, from nautical memorabilia and darts trophies to the back end of a Cadillac, dedicated to Jerry Lee Lewis.

A Saturday night karaoke might not be to everyone’s taste, but this isn’t a pub for wide boys or posers; two more good reasons to come here.

Music? Karaoke, open mic nights, quite possibly occasional visiting Morris dancers.

Food? Themed food night and a basic pub menu – and really good value too.

People? This is a local pub for local people. Expect to meet a few characters.

Opinion? From the main road, you’d never know this place existed. But it’s well worth a short diversion from the tram or bus stop. You’ll be rewarded with a warm welcome, even if it all feels a bit Wild West to start with.

  1. Pubs often bare interesting landlords and charismatic characters. The Boat certainly has the later, and Tony the landlord has an interesting tale to tell.
On the morning of his wedding day to wife Angela, he was bottling up in his wedding suit prior to leaving the pub for the church situated around the back of the boozer.
On leaving the pub, he walked around the block to the church one way, and his then-to-be wife went the other.
The ceremony took place, after which everyone headed back to the pub for the reception.
Sounds an average sort of day in Lenton apart from the fact that any customers expecting a pint in the pub around midday on that Saturday, couldn’t.
A small notice on the front door of the pub read, “Back in 20 minutes – Gone to get married!”
Ask to see Tony’s wedding album. The proof is in the photograph!
