For many, Hockley has always been a place to party. On a weekend evening, you might approach the main thoroughfares of Goosegate and Broad Street with a slight air of trepidation, as bright young things queue up outside loud bars and strange entrances signified by gas boilers or brick alleyways.
But this district is also home to some brilliant boozers, and stepping away from the main streets will take you into the historic Lace Market and onwards to some of the oldest parts of the city. Grand Victorian buildings mix with a human crowd full of creatives, always on the lookout for something a bit different.
And yet, you’ll also find some of the best traditional pubs that Nottingham has to offer. Many have shaped their own versions of history. In some you’ll have to queue for a while – but take that time to look at your surroundings, inside and out – and learn in the process.
