For those of us old enough to remember, this section of High Pavement used to house a true Nottingham classic. But the County Tavern has long gone, and in its place is the Cock and Hoop. Part of the Lace Market Hotel complex, the bar has had something of a rollercoaster history.

In the main bar you’ll find up to four real ales on offer, together with a cosy lounge and a back room with a varied mix of comfy chairs and sofas. In the basement, a dining area with a big screen that sometimes shows sport (but with the sound down) and a curious tiny bolt hole in the side of the wall.

The food here is cooked in the same kitchen as the much posher (and pricier) Merchants Restaurant.

Music? Muzak, actually. Enough to keep you entertained through some of the deadly silences during quiet times here.

Food? A bar menu providing good value and occasional deals combining a main course and a drink, deals on house burgers etc.

Customers? A mix of hotel residents, after work business types and those who just want something a bit less rowdy.

Opinion? A relaxed atmosphere and a good bolt hole away from the melee of the Lace Market strip along High Pavement. Despite being part of the hotel, don’t expect any lock ins.
