The Six Barrel brand is now firmly established with two bars in Nottingham. Like its Hockley cousin, this is a traditional boozer with a modern twist. Stripped back floors and exposed brickwork mean you won’t have to wade through sticky carpets to get to your seat. The toilets, on the other hand, require scuba or hazmat gear.
But any ickiness in the bogs is quickly offset by the great selection of real ales and craft beers on the bar. If you can’t find something you like, check out the cans and bottles in the fridge – which remains sensibly locked unless someone’s being served from it.
The huge stack of boardgames on the shelf is like a game of jenga in itself. And the roof area has been transformed into an outdoor terrace for the warmer months – though if we’re being honest, it often delivers a heady mix of traffic fumes and cigarette ash blowing in the wind from other tables.
Events? Background tunes most of the time, mothly acoustic nights and Saturday night DJs all feature, but this place is mainly about the drinking, and that’s an entirely good thing.,
Food? Get yersen a bag of crisps and stop moaning – there are plenty of nearby eateries if you want that some of thing.
People? Its proximity to the shops and bus stops means that this place attracts a real mix of people at all times of the day. Weekend evenings largely consist of bar hoppers so it’s never too busy for too long.
Opinion? The previous venue on this site was an horrendous Irish bar awash with sticky carpets and bad Guinness. The Six Barrel is a vast improvement and a potential brand for the Pub People to expand to other sites.
Getting here : Any of the many NCT (Yellow, Lime or Brown lines) or Trent Barton (Rainbow One, Two, Threes, Calverton Connection, Pronto) buses to Victoria Centre.
