You might think that a district that has three pubs and two bistro bars would mean a clamour for your custom. But when it comes to Mapperley Top, the rest have a fair bit of work to do to match the quality of the Bread and Bitter.

A former bakery which closed in the early 1990’s, the Bread is another Castle Rock product, which means you’ll be greeted by a mahoosive selection of real ales, a healthy collection of craft beers and a whole load of character.

This place rightly gets busy, but there are plenty of cosy corners if you want to relax. The staff know their stuff when it comes to the beer, so don’t be afraid to ask for a taste. There’s a modest outdoor seating area – a bit smaller than some of its neighbours – but a testimony to quality when customers are happy to stand up against a brick wall with their pints.

Music? A monthly vinyl night, where you can bring your own records. Make sure they’re good ‘uns, though.

Food ? You’ll find a full menu of Castle Rock grub, including light bites and bar snacks. Did someone say pork pie?

People? Many and varied from across the Mapperley Top area and beyond. This is a good, solid community boozer.

Opinion? A bus ride from town – come on, you can afford that, right? The Bread and Bitter is worth the trip. Which is more than can be said for some other bars around here. That said, if you want a Wetherspoons, there’s one next door. Spend your CAMRA vouchers and get out of Dodge.
