
On seeing the impressive building in Old Market Square, the late comedian Ken Dodd asked the taxi driver what the it was. “That’s the Council House, sir,” he replied. “Oh – put my name down for one!”
In the sunshine, the Market Square does look impressive – but it’s around the edges of the city where you’ll find the best boozers. Mansfield Road contains a great mix of old watering holes, some of which had close links to the trade union movement.
These days there’s plenty of fine ale to be found, with one or two adding extras like food or live music.
