Address : 15 Alfreton Rd, Nottingham, NG7 3JE
The “George” has now established itself as one of the top destinations around Canning Circus, setting out an impressive offer of food, drink and entertainment. Given that this place was previously a fancy dress shop, it’s maybe not surprising that the place is often dressed up in several different (very good) ways.
On the bar you’ll find a wide selection of rotating cask ales, ranging from safe bets like Lenton Lane’s Pale Moonlight to more adventurous brews. There are also multiple kegs of craft beer also on rotation, along with a few ciders too.
Despite the high ceiling, the interior has an intimate feel, with booths curving around the windows, a main seating area in the bar itself, and a mezzanine snug which doubles up as a small private hire area. There’s also an outside terrace – mainly used by smokers, but also a good place to cool off in the summer.
And if you’re wondering, the pub is named after George Canning, who managed 118 days as British Prime Minister in 1827. The story goes that he visited the area – previously known as Zion Hill – where people were hanged. On seeing the destruction he declared “this place is like a circus.”
Music? Pleasant background tunes accompany your pint. There’s occasional live music on some weekends and holidays
Food? A wide selection of tapas and small plates are available – they’re high quality so don’t expect it to be cheap. There are also Sunday roasts and occasional themed food nights which usually require booking.
People? In recent times Canning Circus has become something of a thriving student population – but you’ll also find working professionals and seasoned beer lovers on tour around here.
Opinion? The renaissance of this district continues – and while some may argue there’s not enough room for everyone to succeed, the Good Fellow George has a little bit of something for everyone, complementing the other outlets around here.
Getting here : Trent Barton Rainbow One, Twos, Indigo or i4 services, NCT Turquoise or Orange Lines, all to Canning Circus. (Note : there are three stops at Canning Circus – look for the big road junction if you can’t see the pub!)
