In recent times The Malt Shovel has had something of a mixed reputation with a succession of different managers running the place with varying success. Now a new chapter has opened, with the pub coming under the joint management of the nearby Commercial Inn.

On the bar you’ll find a good selection of cask ales and handpulls, helpfully listed in the pub app, which is a lot simpler to use than some we’ve experienced. The staff are friendly and knowledgeable about the products, which also goes a long way when it comes to customer service.

Although the bar consists of a single room, its layout means you can always find a quiet corner. A few benches outside make up the beer “garden” – being off the main road it’s quiet enough for a nice pint while the sun sets.

Music? Occasional live music as advertised, otherwise background tunes.

Food? Again, food is planned once the world starts getting back to normal. But there is a good selection of bar snacks.

People? A firm favourite with Beeston locals – generally a bit more mature – but a fair few students during term time too.

Opinion? The Malt Shovel is just about everything you want in a decent pub. There are no trashy gimmicks here, unlike some of its neighbours. A great place to soak up a pint and the atmosphere.
