Explore CANAL

Not to be confused with the Trent Navigation near Notts County, “The Nav” is usefully positioned on the Wilford Street bridge over the Nottingham Canal – in fact, you could easily walk from one to the other and reward yourself with a drink at both ends. The current owners point out that the current pub has been here since about 1850, describing it as a “grand old lady”.

On the bar itself, three real ales are on offer, which can change daily. There are also two craft beers. The pub itself is independently owned, which often means a good variety.

With many office workers now based at home, the pub has suffered from a decline in footfall. But the owners have invested lots of time into this place, and its customer base is hopefully growing back in line with this.

Music? Yes – The Nav was once well known for its regular gigs. They may be less frequent these days but you’ll often see anything from rock and blues to an open mic night.

Food? You’ll find a classic menu of pub grub here – along with lighter bites

People? As mentioned, the old trend of after work drinks seems to have declined post pandemic – but this is a place that attracts a good mix of folk who enjoy a no nonsense pint.

Opinion? The Navigation has had its ups and downs over the years. But the important thing is that it’s survived – and remains one of the best traditional boozers in this part of town.

Getting here : NCT Green and Blue lines, Trent Barton Cotgrave, Villager, Keyworth and Mainline – all to Carrington Street. Alternatively NCT City Loop services to Broadmarsh (Canal Street), then a five minute walk.
