The Organ Grinder

Address : 21 Alfreton Road, NG7 3JE.

What a difference a Pandemic makes! Back in the depths of history, sticky carpets and mild were en vogue at the old Red Lion, before the Blue Monkey Brewery saved it from closure, and transformed it into its original tap bar, the Organ Grinder. Post-Covid reopening came and went, and then a new manager turned up with some big ideas.

Thankfully, there’s still a wide selection of Monkey’s own primate-punned real ales, stouts and craft beers. This is complemented with a good range of ciders, guest crafts and all manner of spirits. But it’s the atmosphere that’s been transformed here.

Downstairs, you’ll find regular quizzes, DJ nights and live music – while a visit beyond the rooftop beer terrace might bring you into an art exhibition, a spoken word event, an open mic night or a major sports fixture on the telly. This is now a thriving pub most nights of the week.

Events Everything from DJs to acoustic performances and quizzes can be found, depending on the night of the week. Check out the big blackboard by the bar for listings.

Food? Sausage rolls and pork pies (try the excellent Stilton-topped one) are among the more filling bar snacks

Customers? 2022 has seen a definite shift to the ever growing student population around Canning Circus – but this is a genuine community pub that attracts drinkers of all ages.

Opinion? This neighbourhood is full of competition, and it was the right decision for the Organ Grinder to move slightly away from its older customer base, who are more than catered for nearb
y. Pubs need younger people to keep them going, and the result here has been no bad thing.

Getting here : Trent Barton Rainbow One, Twos, Indigo or i4 services, NCT Turquoise or Orange Lines, all to Canning Circus. (Note : there are three stops at Canning Circus – look for the big road junction if you can’t see the pub!)
