Lillie Langtry was a renowned actress with a colourful lifestyle, but there’s nothing to suggest she had anything to do with Nottingham, so perhaps this pub is simply named upon her reputation and fame. That said, colourful lifestyles were abundant in here during the 1970s and 1980s, being the local boozer for journalists from the Nottingham Evening Post. Stories were hatched, deals were done and strikes were plotted.
On the bar you’ll find up to six real ale handpulls, often featuring local beers, along with a healthy selection of crafts and ciders. The staff are usually knowledgable enough about the drinks, and happy to let you have a taste first.
The pub underwent a mini revamp a couple of years ago, but most of the original features remain as they were. Thankfully the toilets were replaced, though even now it’s a bit of a gamble to squeeze though the narrow door at times.
Music? A sound system bangs out non offensive background tunes, though sometimes at a volume that puts them in the foreground. They also show major sports matches on a big screen.
Food? The pub has teamed up with Pieminister to offer a selection of meaty and vegan bites and sides
People? Theatre goers, anxious to down their drinks before curtain up, often a slightly more mature crowd, mixing with the kids who’ve got lost on their way to Yates’s.
Opinion? What you see is what you get. Langtry’s can be one of the stickiest, loudest, busiest places in town. You’re in the city centre. Deal with it – and drink in the atmosphere.
